Disability service for Aston students

The Enabling Team aims to enable every student with a disability or learning difference to reach their potential at University by providing advice, information and support in a timely manner to meet individual needs.  The Team aims to enable students to participate as fully as possible in all aspects of University life, not just academic study.

Support and advice from the Enabling Team is available to all prospective students regardless of point of application, and to current students through to graduation.  The Enabling Team provide support and advice to students who have an ongoing disability, health condition or learning difference including:

  • Sensory impairment (visual / hearing)
  • Mental health conditions
  • Specific learning differences such as dyslexia
  • Autism / Asperger Syndrome
  • Dexterity and mobility impairment
  • Physical disability
  • Health conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and chronic pain / fatigue.

Admissions and pre-entry support

On being informed of a student’s disability, the Enabling Team will invite the student to engage with the service; this will typically be by email in the first instance. We do however fully respect a student’s right not to engage with the service if they choose not to. If we do not hear from you following our first email, we will attempt further contact, after which we leave the onus on you to get in touch if you so choose.

Where academic course outcomes permit, students with ongoing disabilities, health conditions and specific learning differences are entitled to reasonable adjustments to teaching and assessment processes. For these to be granted, we will first need medical evidence or a valid psychological assessment report, depending on the nature of the disability. This will be handled sensitively and in strict confidence. On receipt of suitable evidence, we will liaise with students to prepare a preliminary list of appropriate teaching, learning, and assessment support recommendations (if required). This may be by email, in person or by phone/Skype. Our aim is to have these support recommendations in place by the first teaching week of your new course of study.

Personal care is not provided by the Enabling Team.  Any student requiring personal care such as assistance with washing, dressing and toileting is responsible for organising this themselves and must have these arrangements in place prior to arrival at Aston. This may be available via Social Services (home students) or via private care agencies.  The Enabling Team can advise on potential sources of personal care support if necessary.

If you are eligible for Disabled Student’s Allowance, we will offer guidance on how to apply for this; we will also offer guidance on how to access any support that may be recommended.

If, at any stage of the admissions process, you have concerns about your ability to meet your intended course of study's demands/learning outcomes, we will arrange for you to meet with a member of the academic School concerned to advise you on this matter.  Please note that places to study at Aston are offered on academic merit, irrespective of disability. 

On arrival at Aston 

If you are eligible for non-medical helper support and have notified us in good time, we will have this in place for Aston Welcome. Where possible, we will introduce you to your support providers during this week. The Enabling Team will be available throughout Aston Welcome to meet with you and answer any queries that you may have.

Throughout your studies

New disclosures

You may disclose a disability at any point during your time at University and students are invited to meet with the Disability Advisor for their respective School. These will be dealt with promptly and in the same manner as in the Admissions stage.  We will endeavour to make contact with you within 5 working days of notification.

Support recommendations

Support recommendations and any updates will be forwarded to academic Schools and the Exams Office within five working days of receipt by / agreement with the Enabling Team.  We will amend support recommendations at any stage of study on receipt of additional supporting evidence.

Non-medical helper (NMH) support

If a student is eligible for non-medical helper support, we will help facilitate this on receipt of funding confirmation either via the DSA or through Aston University. Students will be expected to comply with the terms and conditions of the provider and their funding body regarding bookings, support content, and cancellations. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns/issues with your support and we will take any actions necessary to resolve these.

Confidentiality

All information you provide us with will be treated sensitively, stored securely, and only shared on a 'need to know' basis. Students engaging with the service will be asked for their signed permission to share information within the University and with external agencies (where appropriate) and information will only be shared within these limits unless there is thought to be an immediate serious risk to yourself or to others, . 

Complaints and concerns

Any complaints or concerns about the services provided by the Enabling Team should be addressed to Sally Holgate (0121 204 4727) Head of Well being and Enabling in the first instance. A response will be made via email within five working days.
