Young Adult Carer Bursary

National-Express

National Express Foundation & Aston University Partnership

Following a winning bid to the National Express Foundation (NEFB), Aston University has been awarded funding to provide up to thirty £1,000 student bursaries over a four year period, starting in academic year 2016/17.

Up to eight bursaries will be awarded each year in 2016/17, and 2017/18 and up to seven bursaries each year in 2018/19 and 2019/20.

The Bursaries will provide additional funding for living expenses for young adult carers from our student community who are from low income backgrounds and are studying an undergraduate degree.  We define young adult carers as ‘Young people aged 14-25 who care, unpaid, for a family member or friend with an illness or disability, mental health condition or an addiction.’

To be considered eligible for a National Express Foundation Bursary students must be:

  • an unpaid carer for a family member or friend with an illness or disability, mental health condition or an addiction
  • aged 14-25
  • a Home student  with a permanent home address within the UK
  • a current, full time undergraduate Aston University student on an academic year of study or
  • a current undergraduate Aston University student on their placement year where the placement year is unpaid or a study placement
  • from a family with a household income at their permanent address below £25,000 per year (before tax) as confirmed by the Student Loans Company

The bursaries will primarily be awarded to undergraduates whose home address (permanent address) is from one of these geographical areas :

  • The former West Midlands county area including: Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton
  • The South Essex area including: Basildon and Southend-on-Sea
  • The East London area including: Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Greenwich, Hackney, Havering, Lewisham, Newman, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest
  • The Medway area of Kent including postcode areas ME1 – 12 & ME14 which are: Chatham, Faversham, Gillingham, Maidston, Rochester, Sheerness, Sittingbourne, Queenborough and Snodland West Malling

Applications from students whose home address is outside these areas may still be considered on a case by case basis, if all other eligibility criteria are met.

We would not normally accept applications from students who are repeating all or part of an academic year. However where academic failure can be attributed to caring responsibilities, applications may be considered on a case by case basis.
