Police registration

If your Entry Clearance Visa Vignette, your approval letter or your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) states that you are required to register with the police, you must register at the Overseas Visitor Registration Office within 7 days of arriving in Birmingham or collecting your BRP.

You must also update the Police within 7-days of any change to your circumstances. 

Students from certain countries are required to register with the Police. If you are unsure, or if you have been given the condition to register with the Police and you think you should not have been, come to speak to an adviser in the Hub.

Important notes:

Failure to register with the police or update your information means you will be in breach of your visa conditions and this is a serious offence and could affect future visa applications for the UK.

Registering with the Police for the first time


You will need to book an appointment to register with the Police. To create an account and select an appointment, please visit: https://west-midlands.overseasregistrations.uk

You will need to attend your appointment in person at the time you have booked. You will not be seen if you do not have an appointment.

You will need to take the following documents with you if you are registering with the Police for the first time:

  • Valid passport, containing your Entry Clearance Visa Vignette
  • The letter confirming that your application for Entry Clearance was successful
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card
  • 2 colour UK passport sized photographs
  • Credit/card payment of £34 – the Police prefer not to accept cash
  • Proof of address*
  • Proof of student status*

*You can use your CAS email or request a letter from the University to confirm your student status. You can use your housing contract or tenancy agreement to confirm your address in the UK or you can use a letter from the University to confirm your address.

To request a letter from the University:
  • log onto your MAP student homepage after you have completed enrolment;
  • order a “confirmation of student status letter “
  • choose the option to add your UK address, and submit
  • collect the letter from the Hub Reception.


Already registered with the Police and moving/transferring to Birmingham or keeping your details up to date


You are required to register with the Police force that covers the address that you will be living at within 7-days of moving to the new address.

You MUST also keep your details up-to-date on your Police Registration Certificate or you will be in breach of your visa conditions. You will need to amend your details if you change your:

  • Address
  • University / College
  • Course
  • Marital status   
  • Type of visa, visa conditions or expiry date
  • Passport

You will need to take the following documents with you if you are transferring to the West Midlands or updating your existing Police Registration Certificate:

  • Passport, containing your Entry Clearance Visa Vignette
  • BRP card (if applicable)
  • Your existing Police Registration Certificate
  • 1 colour UK passport sized photo
  • Details of the change to be updated. For example: Your new passport, your new Biometric Residence Permit and the Home Office letter confirming that your visa application has been successful, confirmation of your new address*, new course details*, marriage certificate.
