  • Study Guides and Strategies -  a comprehensive site which provides guidance on a wide range of study areas including academic reading and writing, maths and science and technology.  This site is available in a number of language.

  • Learning to Learn - a University of Sheffield site - particularly useful content on developing critical thinking and writing skills in different disciplines.

  • Skills4study - from the publishers of the Study Skills book series, this site also includes a range of subject guides (e.g. law, business and maths) for more tailored information.

  • NoteMaker - an interactive guide and resource to help you improve your note-making skills.

  • Learner Journey - a University of West London site - a collection of valuable online learning tools to help build academic skills.

  • Royal Literary Fund -  writing and essay guides site with useful sections on understanding the question, planning and editing.  The site also includes guides to writing reports and dissertations and making presentations
  • Using English for academic purposes - information and activities aimed at developing the way you use English.  It is particularly good for helping international students develop their academic vocabulary
  • Online Writing Lab - offers a range of online and printable information sheets and worksheets with advice and activities on grammar, spelling and punctuation as well as essay writing, report writing and general study skills
  • Assignment Survival Kit devised by Staffordshire University, this site will help you create an assignment action plan and provide links to guides on essay and report writing, references and research skills
  • The Academic Phrasebank . a general resource for academic writers with useful examples of words and phrases used in academic writing. Areas covered include being critical, reporting results, introducing work and writing conclusions
  • Uni Learning . from the University of Wollongong in Australia, this site contains advice and activities to help you develop academic writing and reading strategies.

  • Learn Higher -This is another useful site designed to help you understand how to reference and avoid plagiarism.


Maths Centre . offers advice and activities on many areas of maths, engineering, business, accountancy, economics, bioscience, physical sciences and health science.

Metal project . this site focuses on mathematics for economics students, although it is also useful for other disciplines.
