This programme allows successful Combined Honours Mathematics or Chemistry students to proceed to a third and fourth year Combined Honours programme which includes Initial Teacher Education delivered by our partner, Newman University College. Newman is one of the leading Initial Teacher Education providers in the country. Based in south Birmingham, they will provide the equivalent of a one-year PGCE programme built into your third and fourth years of study at Aston.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
You apply for one of our standard Mathematics or Chemistry combinations within Combined Honours, then towards the end of your second year you apply for transfer to the Teacher Training pathway. If successful you start your final year of studies at Aston, then after the first semester you move to Newman University College for a one-year teacher training programme. After that you return for your second final year semester at Aston. If you are successful on the teacher training programme you graduate with your Combined Honours in two subjects PLUS Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), ready to apply for secondary school teaching posts in mathematics or science. Mathematics and Science are shortage subjects, particularly at secondary level, consequently teachers specialising in these subjects can be highly sought after.
