An international engineering giant will be joining forces with Aston University’s Power Electronics & Power Systems Group to advance their research into power grid efficiency in the UK and worldwide. Alstom Grid UK Limited is part of the global Alstom Company, and provides turnkey thermal and renewable power generation, rail transport systems and electricity transmission and management products and solutions. With over 130 years of experience, Alstom Grid is ranked amongst the top three in the electrical transmission sector, with engineering sites worldwide. Alstom Grid designs, manufactures, installs and services power transmission and systems that empower the planet’s low carbon economy. As a result of the earlier successful PhD collaboration, a close relationship has developed between the company and Aston. This Knowledge Transfer Partnership aims to develop new power electronic circuits for Alstom Grid UK’s business to help the company design, build and test a hardware demonstrator of a high voltage, DC-DC converter to facilitate the design of a multi-megawatt converter for advanced power connections, which will help develop smarter, stable and environmentally friendly energy networks for the future. Applications are now open to potential associates with a PhD, or working towards a PhD in a power electronics subject area. Aston University is looking for confident, credible and personable candidates with good interpersonal skills to work within Alstom Grid’s team, as part of this project the associate will be able to develop in planning and managing various projects.
