Aston University have recently made a move to centralise all placement activity to create a single point of contact for employers. The move to a single, centrally based Placements Team will make it easier than ever for employers from all sectors and industries to engage with Aston University for placement activities.

At Aston University around 70 per cent of undergraduates now opt for a placement as part of a four year course. The university strongly believes that placements are vital in providing students with the high level of work based skills they need, while offering employers an opportunity to identify suitable students for future employment.

Many recruiters have come to recognise the benefits of offering student placements within their business.  Naomi Blackbourn, graduate recruitment officer at Ernst & Young said; ‘Aston University students and graduates add value to Ernst & Young right from day one. In this year’s intake of industrial placements, Aston University students made up a large part of our industrial placement in take.  Aston University sandwich placements offer and attract motivated and proactive undergraduates looking to get their career off to a good start. These are exactly the type of high calibre undergraduates we are looking for.’

Research has shown that placement experiences enhance employability and an increasing number of graduate recruiters consider placement experience as an indicator of an applicant’s suitability. This has been clearly proven at Aston University and has been recognised by the 2010-11 High Fliers survey, which again ranked Aston University amongst the top 20 UK universities most likely to be targeted by the UK’s top graduate recruiters.

The new Placements Team will work with companies from the West Midlands, the UK and internationally to source and manage placement opportunities for undergraduate students.  They will promote placement opportunities to students across all academic areas of the university and work to match them with companies where they can develop their own skills and at the same time be a real asset to the business.  A dedicated resource will offer students support throughout their placement and will work with students to ensure they are work ready through training and support.
