Dr. Ioannis Kyrou

Ioannis

I joined Aston Medical School in October 2014, having spent the previous years as an Endocrinology fellow at the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire (Coventry, UK).

I have obtained my medical degree with first-class honours from Athens Medical School (Athens, Greece) and I have been involved in biomedical research since my medical school years. I have worked in several clinical and research posts with primary interest in endocrinology and metabolism. In my previous posts I have been responsible for the completion of several research studies and clinical trials and for contributing to the training of medical students and junior doctors.

I have also completed my PhD in medicine at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick (Coventry, UK) which was focused on obesity-related complications and pathophysiology. My main research interests involve obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and stress.

  • Medical Diploma, Athens Medical School, University of Athens, Greece (2001)
  • PhD in Medicine, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, UK (2013)

  • 2013 - date: Honorary Clinical Lecturer, Division of Metabolic & Vascular Health, Warwick Medical School
  • 2007 - 2014: Fellow in Endocrinology, University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust
  • 2007 - 2012: PhD in Medicine, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick
  • 2006 - 2007: Fellow in the 1st Department of Internal Medicine, 401 Hellenic General Army Hospital, Athens, Greece

I contribute to the development of courses in metabolic medicine/metabolism for undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have also authored several book chapters in the field of endocrinology/metabolism for the curriculum of endocrinology training seminars organised by the Hellenic Endocrinology Association. I contribute to the training of medical students and junior doctors at the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire. My role also involves setting up and supervising research projects focused on the pathophysiology of obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome and chronic stress for postgraduate students obtaining a research degree.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Obesity and obesity-related complications
  • Metabolism and energy homeostasis
  • Stress and HPA axis

  • Effects of obesity on functional limitations and disability, funded by the DWP
  • Effects of bariatric surgery on metabolic improvement and remission of T2DM funded by the EFSD

My research projects will be focusing on the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity, and chronic stress (HPA axis). Potential candidates are welcomed to contact me with an idea for a research project in these areas or a fully developed proposal.
