On Wednesday 6th April 2011, approximately 45 members of ABS staff, including academics and PhD students, attended the inaugural ABS research day.  The day commenced with a welcome from Pawan Budhwar, Associate Dean Research, followed by a presentation from Martin Griffin, PVC Research regarding University Research Strategy and the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF).  ABS success in gaining European research funding was highlighted in presentations by both Christopher Brewster and Sumon Bhaumik.  Presentations by a selection of ABS Research Centres allowed attendees to gain insight into potential cross-School and cross- University collaborations.

The informal format of the afternoon session, entitled Open Space, allowed academics and students to gather in groups to discuss potential ideas for future research projects.  Seed corn funding and the opportunity to establish mini-retreats to work on full funding proposals were made available.  At the end of the day, groups were invited to forward their proposals to the ADR for consideration.

The day was highly successful in providing attendees with interesting case studies from both individuals and groups and highlighted the diverse nature of research within ABS.
