The Market Research Society (MRS)
The MRS represents all those who need, use, generate or interpret the evidence essential to making good decisions for commercial and public policy.
With members in more than 60 countries, the MRS is the world's largest research association serving all those with professional equity in provision or use of market, social and opinion research, and in business intelligence, market analysis, customer insight and consultancy.
The MRS collaborates with Aston’s Marketing Group in a number of ways. The MRS accredits the MSc Market Research & Consultancy, and for candidates successfully completing this degree programme, the MRS awards an additional Advanced Certificate in Market and Social Research Practice. The MRS also supplies guest lecturers on a number of modules. Finally, the Marketing Group at Aston is active within the MRS Midlands Network.
The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)
The importance of the Chartered Institute of Marketing for marketing practice
The Chartered Institute of Marketing is the largest of the marketing professional bodies in the UK, with a membership of circa 35,000, having a mission “to develop the marketing profession and those who work within it for the benefit of the economy and society”. In particular one its key objectives is “to be the champion of responsible marketing practice”, which is why it is important, for those students who are reading for an under-graduate or post-graduate marketing degree at Aston, that there is an opportunity to be part of the CIM community and in doing so be strongly connected with marketing practice.
The value for students of working closely with the CIM
For example, in the early years of undergraduate study, it is important to understand how theory relates to how the marketing profession works in practice. When searching for a marketing work placement, in the sandwich year of the degree, it is essential students can demonstrate an engagement with the profession and have the ability to discuss practical issues faced by the profession. In under-graduates securing their first marketing job, employers are looking for graduates who are embedded in practice and can make a difference right from the off. For those undertaking masters-level studies, an understanding of the contribution of marketing activities to successful and sustainable enterprises is essential; as is the ability to understand how marketing best practice can be transferred and implemented. This is why the Marketing Group, at Aston Business School, works closely with the CIM.
How we work with the CIM to strongly connect students with practice
The CIM hold special events at the Business School, designed to present new ideas and provide practical advice on how to address topical and challenging marketing issues. Members of the CIM deliver lectures as part of degree programs, to provide practical insight on specialist subject specific issues. Career development sessions are held, as part of the Universities CIM Affiliate Scheme, to help students who join the scheme, to plan a career in marketing. Working closely with the Aston University Marketing Society, the CIM provides access to notable marketers from the world of advertising and business, holding debates and discussions on the issues of the day.
