As a Senior Lecturer in Law Peter’s work focuses on three main activities: firstly, his research relating to two distinct areas of Media Law (i) defamation and the protection of corporate reputation and (ii) social media’s impact on freedom of expression, media freedom, privacy and reputation; secondly, his teaching and convenorship of Criminal Law and Professional Skills & Ethics; and thirdly, his interest in employability and his role in developing and managing relationships with practice and industry partners.
Peter’s Media Law research has led to articles in leading academic journals, as well as contributions to industry and media publications, book chapters and conference papers. His defamation and corporate reputation research was recently cited by the Scottish Law Commission’s Discussion Paper on Defamation.
Peter joined the Law School in September 2014. Prior to this he was a Senior Lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University, and before that, a Visiting Tutor at the University of Nottingham. During his academic career Peter has taught a number of subjects in addition to Criminal Law and Professional Skills & Ethics, including, the Law of Evidence and Tort Law. As well as being an academic, Peter is a barrister, and Door Tenant, at East Anglian Chambers, where he specialises in general Civil and Criminal Litigation. In 2016, as a result of his Media Law research, Peter joined a London based international law firm as a consultant lawyer.
Within the Law School Peter has served as the joint Course Director for the LLB programmes since September 2014 (a position he will hold until the end of 2016-17 academic year). Additionally, he is responsible for leading the School’s employability strategy, which includes developing and managing relationships with practice and industry partners. The purpose of this work is not only to coordinate activities and initiatives to enable our students to engage with employers from a variety of industries, but to help them to develop the professional skills, attributes and values they will need to succeed within their chosen careers. As a result of Peter’s contribution in this area, in January 2016, he was awarded Senior Fellowship status of the Higher Education Academy. Prior to this Peter was a Fellow of the HEA from 2014.
