Helping Bupa Turn Strategy into Action

We once again welcomed participants from Bupa International’s Senior Development Programme, who are completing their third and final executive development module “Strategy into Action” here at Aston Business School.

Prior to the module, the participants had identified 3 live strategic business issues which formed the back-bone of the two days and against which the learning from the first 2 modules (and new material in module 3) could be applied.

Bupa is an internationally respected brand.  Bupa International is the specialist international division of Bupa, established in 1971.  It was founded to extend health cover to expatriates around the globe.  The company has since expanded its network to 190 countries and its membership has grown to over 800,000 people.  In order to continue to be the world leader in health insurance, the company invests in continual development of its systems, products, property, people and technology.  In line with these commitments, a programme of strategic change and restructuring is currently taking place at Bupa, with new growth targets for 2020 creating fresh challenges for those in senior leadership and executive roles.

In partnership with Bupa International we designed the Senior Development Programme (SDP) to deliver real business impact.  The application of their learning is the key criterion for the success of the programme.  Models, concepts and best practice tools and techniques have been grounded in activities over the 3 modules to re-inforce application back in the work-place. The three modules are:
  • Strategy Management: delivered by Dr Michael Smets and Dr Andy Bass
  • Leading through Emotions: delivered by Professor Robin Martin and Dr Geoff Thomas
  • Strategy into Action: delivered by Dr Michael Smets and Dr Andy Bass
The Bupa International SDP follows a development journey informed by an arc.  It begins at the strategic organisational level, moves down to focus on individual leadership behaviours and then returns up the arc to influence and impact at the strategic organisational level.

This third and final module integrates the tools, concepts and models introduced in the first two modules and provides a framework against which they can be applied within a real business case context.  This is a very pragmatic approach allowing participants to test and practice their learning in ‘real time’. 
The participants worked in two groups, each considering one of two strategically important projects that will deliver real and lasting business value.   The outcome from the module was a powerful first draft of the issue sand recommendations in a prepared presentation of the two strategic projects.  With further work, these will be presented to Senior management at Bupa International.

The module engendered very high levels of positive feedback as participants could palpably see the value of what they had learned and were able to use it effectively on business challenges which are immediate and pressing.
