Strategic Planning for Vietnamese HEIs

Danang Strategic Thinking Workshop
We delivered a workshop on higher education strategic planning at the University of Danang, Vietnam.

Strategic Planning Tools

The half day introductory workshop was facilitated by Terry Hodgetts, Director of the Centre for Executive Development at Aston Business School, at the University of Danang in Vietnam.

Terry was supported at the event by Professor Alison Halstead, Aston’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Strategic Academic Development, and Dr Sue Garton, Aston’s Director of Postgraduate Programmes in English.

The University of Danang is currently undergoing a stage of growth and development, establishing itself as a research-led focal point in the region. As a consequence of these factors, University leaders felt it appropriate to spend time thinking about strategy and future implications in anticipation of the changes the university will be facing.

Strategic Thinking

The workshop was attended by thirty heads of department, vice deans and their senior reports from all areas of the University, who were given an opportunity to learn about a range of fundamental strategic planning tools.  Participants were also able to begin to use these tools pragmatically, to help clarify their strategic thinking about their particular functions and schools of study.

The workshop event forms part of an on-going initiative between Aston University and the University of Danang with the aim of supporting a proposed partnership for further collaboration in the region.  We are hoping to follow up the workshop with a first executive development programme, to be run in Danang this autumn at the newly founded Centre for Executive Leadership.
