Nuclear Managers Learn Technical Leadership

NSAN Technical Leadership
We are pleased to welcome participants from Magnox and Babcock to their second module of the Certificate of Nuclear Professionalism.

A total of twenty participants will take part in our two day Technical Leadership module, to build their understanding of the key requirements involved when leading technical teams in the nuclear industry.

Rigorous and Practical

Magnox, owned by EnergySolutions, is the management and operations contractor responsible for ten nuclear sites and one hydroelectric plant in the UK.  Magnox have worked in partnership with the National Skills Academy for Nuclear to help improve professional development capability in the nuclear industry. The graduate-level Certificate of Nuclear Professionalism is one outcome of this collaboration.

The Certificate incorporates seven modules designed to equip individuals with the necessary skills for today’s professional working within the nuclear industry. The Centre for Executive Development is providing faculty and content for three of the modules: Commercial Awareness, Project Management and Technical Leadership.

The Centre for Executive Development is delivering the Technical Leadership module on 5th and 6th November 2013 at Aston Business School.  Dr Andy Bass will deliver the module, and Brian Wimpenny, an independent safety consultant with over forty years’ experience of the nuclear sector, including working at senior management level and as a regulator, will be in attendance and contribute as co-tutor and industry specialist.

The module is contextualised: participants learn new concepts, tools and methodologies and apply these to a case study based on a “real world” scenario. Participants are assessed through completion of a learning log and a reflective practice assignment, accredited by the Open University. The experience provides participants with a rigorous and practical grounding in some of the key knowledge areas and skills required for success in the nuclear industry.
