Psychology of Success

On 22 March 2012 former Olympic Medallist and Chairman of the English Institute of Sport, Steve Cram MBE, visited Aston to present “Psychology of Success”.

The event was supported by Yorkshire Bank for which Steve is an ambassador. Yorkshire Bank works closely with Aston Business School by partnering on the Aston University Professional Mentoring Scheme, which matches business professionals to mentor second year students before their placement year.

In his lecture, Steve shared his thoughts to an audience of 90 on the psychology behind success and what it takes to create a determined mind set. He highlighted the attitudes we have determine our success, so it is important to believe in yourself, understand what makes you click and be competitive with yourself. In order to achieve success, we should set a strategy and have goals, understand the sequences and the small steps to achieve the goal. He emphasised success is not our destination and a sport concept, “Personal Best” could be applied in our professional and personal lives, in which rather competing with other people, we should record our “Personal Best” in different tasks. We should set ourselves a new goal once we have achieved our current “Personal Best”.  He shared the mistakes he has made in his career and suggested to the audience mistakes are lessons to learn, which remind us how to improve next time, but not showing we are failures. The session ended up with some lively questions and answer sessions, chaired by Professor John Edwards, the Executive Dean of Aston Business School.
