On Tuesday 9 November over 50 people gathered for the official opening of the Aston Business School Trading Room. The facility, powered by Thomson Reuters software, is the first of its kind in the West Midlands and an innovative development in the delivery of Finance & Investments and Investment Analysis, both Masters (MSc) courses.
Aston University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Julia King opened the event with a welcome address highlighting how innovations such as the trading room help to enhance the skills and employability of our students. Professor Jim Steeley, Head of the Finance & Accounting Group at Aston Business School then delivered a short presentation about the facilities, how they work and the benefit they will provide.
Following the presentations, the ribbon-cutting was conducted by Professor Julia King, Professor Mike West, Executive Dean Aston Business School and David Glauert, Senior Relationship Manager, Thomson Reuters. Guests were then invited into the room where students were demonstrating how the facilities worked.
The room has been laid out classroom style with four rows of desks supporting twenty computer workstations. At the front of the room is a 21-foot-long wall-mounted Daktronics LCD Ticker Display which provides live market data and news. In addition, there are two Thomson Reuters InfoPoints which provide an exciting and real-life experience of working in the finance industry. There is also an instructor console at the front of the room linked to an overhead projector which allows classroom demonstration of all the software.
