Research

Researchers at Aston have made many significant breakthroughs. Much of the research on the type 2 diabetes drug Metformin was conducted here. Cancer drug Temodal was created and tested at Aston and has become the most successful brain tumour treatment worldwide. Further achievements include the development of implantable contact lenses for age-related macular degeneration and an award-winning hydrogel spinal injection that prevents disc friction. We are the only UK university with a Regius Professorship in Pharmacy, awarded by HM The Queen as part of her 90th birthday celebrations. Researchers at Aston Medical School recently completed the world’s first randomised control trials on statins in preeclampsia (The StAmP Trial).  In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), Aston ranked 5th out of 94 universities in the UK for Allied Health Professions, with 78% of our research ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’.

The research conducted at Aston University changes people’s lives. Through our European Bioenergy Research Institute, we are working to create solutions for a low-carbon world and through EnergyHarvest we are helping to solve the problem of open field burning in India and improving health outcomes for rural communities.

Our Forensic Linguistics team works closely with the police and other agencies to help solve serious crimes and our new virtual reality centre is improving the lives of those with brain injury and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The list is extensive and you can help us to do more.

“EnergyHarvest is a real credit to Aston. It's very satisfying as a donor to participate in a project that has enormous potential to help alleviate a major source of global pollution. Aston is really making a difference with their practical, can-do approach."

Next steps

To continue breaking new ground and finding solutions to global problems, Aston University is creating fifty 50th Anniversary Research Fellowships and Studentships, to give the opportunity for the brightest enquiring minds from all backgrounds to continue their research studies at Aston. We have created a fund where 50% of the funding will be provided by Aston, while we will be seeking the generosity of our alumni, friends, charitable trusts and corporate partners to help fund the remaining 50%.  Together we provide the next generation of research leaders the opportunity to think the unthinkable and discover the undiscoverable to become Aston’s ‘Research Pioneers’
