Memories of the Guild of Students

22 January 2018

From the 1960s to present day, the building that housed the Guild of Students, as it was formerly known, has served us well but it is now time to say goodbye. To commemorate this building and the good times that have been had there, we have collated a few images of the student nights and memories that we have access to from over the past 60 years. Please see the slideshow below for the images we currently have.

Add your memories to the collection
If you would like to add your memories and photographs to the collection, we really want to see and share them. The pick of the bunch will then be featured in this year's alumni magazine which will be sent to over 50,000 alumni in September. Please email any snaps to alumniinfo@aston.ac.uk and share memories of your time in the Guild.

The new Students’ Union Building

With Aston’s plans to expand student numbers to 13,000 by 2020 and students’ rising expectations of modern, high quality social, welfare and sports services the current building is no longer fit for purpose and will close its doors for the final time in early 2019.

The new purpose built Student Union facility will be located in the heart of the campus, next to the Chancellor’s Lake and in the centre of the Student Residences. The welcoming modern space with a double height entrance hall will hopefully appeal to all students and will be home to over 100 student clubs and societies.

The £10m building will provide flexible socialising and learning spaces, The Advice and Representation Centre which counsels students on issues relating their health, wellbeing and academic studies, provide prayer and meeting rooms as well as a bar, cafe, shop and two large halls for events. The new Union will reposition the Students’ Union as the hub of student campus life.

The new Students’ Union will open its doors in April 2019, and internal layout plans for the new building can be seen here

Final Night Out in the Guild

We have received quite a few emails about whether we are holding a final event for alumni in the Guild. I am delighted to confirm we are working with the current Students’ Union team to plan a ‘last night in the Guild’ event. More information will follow soon. If you would like to be involved in the planning stages, please email alumniinfo@aston.ac.uk.

If you are arranging your own reunion, please note, the Students’ Guild building is no longer open at the weekend unless it is for a special event. Aston University has a hotel on campus which offers special rates to alumni, for more information, please visit: www.aston.ac.uk/alumni/benefits-and-services/

Support the new Students' Union Building

The new £10m Students’ Union building will be transformational for today’s Aston students, offering purpose built facilities for socialising and learning. Work will commence on the new building in April 2018, opening in the spring 2019 and we are looking for support to kit out the meeting spaces and to help the Clubs and Societies.
