Alumnus Charles Li shared strategic insights with our MBAs

Aston Business School welcomed Honorary Professor Dr Charles Li back to campus on the 22 November 2018 to share his leadership experiences and strategic insights from his career with our MBA students. Then meeting our current MScs for networking over lunch.

Charles studied his PhD in Strategic Management at Aston Business School and graduated in 2009 after completing his Engineering/ Industrial Management Masters’ degree at The University of Birmingham in 1989 after studying his diploma in China.

Charles’ career has spanned from broadcast media in his early career as a producer for BBC World Service to a 23 year career in banking. As an Independent Adviser Charles has progressed into retail in his role as a Non-Executive Director at, House of Fraser, which is owned by Nanjing Xinjiekou Department Store Co. Ltd.  Charles also holds Non-Executive positions at IDT International/ Oregon Scientific and ANZ China, ANZ is among the top 4 banks in Australia, the largest banking group in New Zealand and the Pacific.

Charles describes himself as ‘A seasoned executive with proven track records in leading, growing and transforming businesses with a; deep understanding of global macro issues and cultural differences, proven ability in dealing with complex regulatory matters, governance issues and business restructuring and undertaking a portfolio of non-executive board roles at reputable companies and institutions across Asia/China and Europe.’

During the hour-long session Charles engaged the MBA audience with key strategic and leadership insights from his career. His session was well received by our audience, prompting lots of questions and audience participation.

Charles then stayed to meet over 40 postgraduate students, from all our Aston Business School disciplines over lunch to chat informally about his career.
