Scientists in Birmingham are holding a free public meeting on dementia research next week to coincide with the start of the UK’s largest dementia research conference. The meeting, organised by scientists from Aston University and the University of Birmingham, is supported by Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.
The public meeting will be held on Monday 26 March and will feature displays, information and short talks about dementia and the current research underway to tackle the condition. The meeting takes place on the eve of the Alzheimer’s Research UK Conference 2012, a scientific conference which will see dementia experts from across the world travelling to Birmingham to discuss their latest findings.
Dr Eric Hill, from the School of Life & Health Sciences at Aston University, who has helped to organise the event, said: “We would welcome everyone to come along and find out about the pioneering research that is happening on their doorstep. This meeting will be a great way to find out more about dementia, talk to the research experts and ask questions.”
Dr Laura Phipps, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “There are over 820,000 people in the UK living with dementia and over 9,000 people in Birmingham alone. With an increasingly ageing population, there is a desperate need to understand dementia and develop effective new treatments to stop it. We hope this event will provide the opportunity for people to see the real impact that research can have on the lives of those with dementia.”
The meeting will take place on 26 March from 4.30 - 6pm at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham. Refreshments will be provided. Easy access by train (University stop) or free parking on campus after 4.30pm. For further information contact Sarah Aldred on email@example.com or 0121 414 7284.
