Aston’s Student LGBT Society helps learners step on career ladder
A one-day exhibition which aims to raise awareness of employment issues, including up-to-date information on employment law, will take place at Aston University next week.
The event, themed Your Rights at Work, has been organised by the Student Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Society at Aston University.
It will take place on Friday 10 June from 2pm to 5pm in the Student Guild Hall at Aston University.
The event aims to help, support and offer advice and guidance to all students seeking work, whether imminently or in the near future. In particular, the exhibition will attempt to dissolve myths surrounding employment and sexual orientation.
Luke Morgan, Chair of Aston’s LGBT Society, said:
“With so many young people becoming fast disillusioned with the current jobs situation, we hope this event will give them hope and enthusiasm. In addition, some people still believe that they are disadvantaged because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Absolutely not. We will work tirelessly to help support fellow students in their mission to find work.”
Jane Tyrrell, Associate Director of Human Resources at Aston University, said:
“Aston has had a student LGBT Society for some time now and within the last year has also established a staff network. We positively promote equality and actively celebrate diversity and very much welcome events like this which raise awareness of the issues faced by LGBT staff and students in the workplace.”
Also present on the day will be experts in the field of employment issues from law firm Pinsent Masons, teacher’s union, NASUWT and Sean Russell, Chairman of the Employees Network, which is part of Midlands LGBT, a local campaigning group.
The event is free to attend, open to all and refreshments will be available. Just turn up. There is no need to register. To find out more contact Luke Morgan on 07891 242951 or email email@example.com. To find out more about the Society, visit its Facebook page – AstonLGBT.
