International students from Aston University in Birmingham are competing to become the next big singing sensations at a unique event this week. The University’s Hong Kong and Chinese Student Societies are launching the University’s first A* Star Award – an Oriental singing competition.
Students from Aston and other universities have auditioned for one of ten places in the final, which takes place at Aston’s Students’ Guild on Friday, 20th March at 7pm. Finalists performed a two minute long, self-selected song to secure a place.
Cash and voucher prizes are on offer in the competition for the A* Star Winner, Runner-Up, the Most Popular Singer and the Best Dressed singer.
Participants and the audience will also be entertained with performances from special guests including dancers and live bands.
Hugo Ng, organiser of the A* Competition, said ‘Enthusiasm for singing has increased sharply among our international students and for this reason we have decided to hold our first big singing competition at Aston. We are hoping it will become an annual event and that people will recognise the name of the A* Star Award as THE Oriental Singing Competition.’
