Find your pure potential

8 July 2008 – for immediate release

On 9th July Pure Potential and Aston University held a free event on campus for 700 state school students from across the UK in an attempt to inspire them to apply to leading universities.

This is the fourth year that the event encouraged Year 12 and Year 13 state school students to apply to some of the UK’s leading universities and the second year running that Aston has been involved. Clear and relevant information on the university application process and career options were particular areas of focus on the day.

Research has shown that private school students are almost twice as likely to go onto the top universities as their equally qualified state educated counterparts. Pure Potential exists to redress this imbalance and make sure all students have the information and confidence they need to fulfil their potential. The lack of applications from state school students to the top universities is often due to a lack of confidence, a fear of student debt and not enough information on the opportunities available to them as graduates.

The Pure Potential event is for students who are making an application to university and want to get ahead with their career. The event is completely free thanks to the support of top recruiters from some of the most competitive industries.

James Seymour, Head of Schools and Colleges Liaison at Aston, said: ‘We are delighted again to welcome the Pure Potential conference to our campus in 2008. Information, inspiration, advice and guidance is the key to helping prospective students make informed University and career choices. The Pure Potential event, alongside the wide range of activities that Aston and other Universities engage in with sixth form/college students is an excellent preparation for University as well as graduate working life.’

In addition to this event, Pure Potential is running a further seven events across the UK as well as a huge amount of highly interactive information for students on the website at www.purepotential.org.

The eight Pure Potential Days are held by partner host universities across the country in Cardiff, Southampton, Newcastle, Aston (Birmingham), Manchester, Leeds, LSE and Imperial College, London. Places are limited and demand for places has been extremely high.
