Dream comes true for first class Aston University graduate

22 September 2006 – for immediate release

Rachel Szczekala, a first class honours graduate from Aston University has just landed herself her dream job as Derby city’s envoy.

Derby is twinned with the German city of Osnabruck and each year somebody is chosen to live in the German city to promote relations between the two cities. This tradition has been upheld since 1976, when the cities majors met to sign the twinning agreement.

The 22 year old BSc German graduate only graduated in July of this year, but can’t wait to continue the tradition as it has been an ambition of hers for a long while.

‘The envoy position is advertised every year in the local newspaper. Ever since I began learning German I have always wanted to apply for it,’ said Rachel.

Rachel will begin her role in October where she will be tasked with organising trips for Osnabruck residents to Derby, arranging pen pals and host families, visiting local schools to talk about the twinning link, interpreting for official visitors, translating texts, as well as writing articles for the local press.

‘Having spent a placement year working for Volkswagen in northern Germany when I was studying at Aston, I feel my degree has given me invaluable preparation and experience which will help me with this job. My level of fluency in German was especially helped by the fantastic course and lecturers at Aston,’ added Rachel.
