ASTON University has teamed up with the UK’s biggest graduate recruiter to give first year undergraduate students an exciting new opportunity – a programme focusing on transferable employability skills aimed at helping them to develop key competencies for their future careers.
The innovative programme was designed and run by the Graduate Recruitment Team of PricewaterhouseCoopers, in partnership with Aston University’s Careers Service.
45 students were selected to participate from nearly 100 applicants. The programme ran for three weeks and the workshops were on team-working, presentations and networking skills.
Gillian Matson, a Graduate Recruitment Officer based at PwC’s Birmingham office said: ’I was amazed at how quickly the students adapted to the course content and they were really eager to get involved. It was a real joy to see their confidence develop over the three week period. Hopefully most of the students will return to the course next year.'
Steve Thompson, Senior Careers Adviser at Aston said: ‘This has been an exciting development for the university. We have been very pleased that PwC has aimed the course at first years and the students’ response has been superb. It ties in beautifully with our aim to encourage the employability agenda within the University and with students. The involvement of PwC in running the programme, also reflects the quality of students we have here.’
The programme will run again in the next academic year, with the same group of students taking part in further workshops and a new group of first year students taking the initial programme.
