CBI DG launches Learn on TV
DIGBY JONES is in Birmingham today unveiling Aston University's �5.5 million education and training multimedia project, 'Learn on tv'.
The director general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) joins guests including Aston's Chancellor, Sir Adrian Cadbury, and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Wright at the prestigious event. Birmingham-born Jones is expected to voice his support for the initiative designed to improve the skills of the whole of the region's workforce.
Developed by the University's multimedia broadcast unit, Aston Media, Learn on tv offers greater access to learning and education. It will make live recordings of learning events - such as formal education courses, seminars, workshops and briefings – and channel them as moving images to participating organisations throughout the region. The initiative involves significant collaboration with other content providers and organisations.
Learn on tv programmes are deliverable in a range of formats to suit the needs of the customer, including via DVD, broadband to PC and satellite as well as video. It is this flexibility that enables the business community distribute 'remote' training, overcoming some of the difficulties of teaching shift-workers and part time staff.
'Learn on tv is television for the 21st century,' said Judith Mackay, head of Aston Media.
'Business people, particularly in SMEs, need as much flexibility as possible built in to when and how they access learning. Learn on tv provides this,' she continued. 'Businesses choose the rate at which they learn and the way in which they learn.'
Advantage West Midlands (AWM) funded Learn on tv to the tune of �3.4 million as part of its initiative to improve skills by providing access to learning 'anytime, anyplace, anywhere and in any format'.
Aston Media, which has extensive experience of producing video materials for the university's distance learners, was selected by AWM to develop this multimedia system because of its expertise with new technologies.
AWM's chief executive John Edwards said: 'The Learn on tv scheme is a great example of how learning can be innovative and exciting.
'It is also a fantastic method of making education and training more freely available to people across the region, at the same time making a real difference to the region's skills base,' he continued.
During the three years of funding by AWM, Aston Media will be able to provide participating organisations with Learn on tv programmes free of charge.
Learn on tv's ease of access will be welcomed by employers and employees alike; it is also a boon for learning providers aiming to reach wider audiences.
