W.G. Eaton gets a graduate advantage

ASTON UNIVERSITY Computer Science student Lola Tolowawi has just completed a successful pilot three-month vacation project at Birmingham manufacturing company WG Eaton.

Lola has been helping to develop the IT system for the city centre based company. Her placement was organised through Graduate Advantage, a new 3.5 million initiative that will offer the best and brightest graduates in the region to local businesses. The multi-million pound recruitment project, which is run from a central unit based at Aston University, provides a strategic approach to graduate retention and utilisation across the region, with particular emphasis on the needs of SMEs.

Managing Director of W.G. Eaton, Peter Wall, explained: "The whole thing has been a great success. Graduate Advantage is very user friendly and an extremely efficient service with the minimum administration. It has given us a placement student who has brought her IT expertise to W.G. Eaton and has helped us develop our new Management Information System whilst giving her invaluable work experience. I thoroughly recommend Graduate Advantage to other local businesses and students."

Lola said: 'I really enjoyed my placement as it gave me a full flavour of working life. It was great to gain experience in a business working in 'real time'. The experience has opened my eyes to the needs of small businesses and specifically the role of IT within them. Plus I hope to gain a Personal Development Award (City & Guilds), giving me a qualification in recognition of my progress on the placement.'
