Aston: Best Business School in UK outside London

ASTON Business School (ABS) in Birmingham is the best full range business school in the country according to The Times Good University Guide's survey of 92 UK business schools. ABS is ranked second behind the specialist London School of Economics (www.times-archive.co.uk/onlinespecials/education/business.html).

ABS has gone from being number 34 in the same league table last year to number 2 in this year's edition of the influential guide, published this month. This dramatic leap also makes ABS the most improved business school in the UK. Its progress follows news of ABS's achievement of gaining a top grade 5 in last December's Research Assessment Exercise and a flawless 24/24 for its teaching quality (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education).

Professor John Saunders, Head of ABS, said: "The Times top ranking of our Business School is a vindication of the effort of the whole School and the University's focus on excelling in teaching and research. It also explains why our graduates are the most employable in the UK. As a full range business school we are second to none.

"Our success is the result of our radically new way of operating as a Business School and University but really it is a matter of practising what we preach. A belief in people working together, sharing endeavour and success, having a clear strategy and striving to excel in all we do."

ABS is now one of the UK's largest and most successful full service business schools. It is a leader in undergraduate business courses, MSc programmes and operates a highly successful MBA available full time, part time and through distance learning.

There is also a substantial doctoral programme with over 150 students currently registered for either PhD or DBA. The school currently employs 80 full time academic staff and around 50 support staff, with a turnover of 15m. Its plans for expansion over the next five years will see the academic staffing rise to over 120 and turnover exceeding 25m.

Note for editors:

Founded in 1895 and a university since 1966, Aston University has a proven history of academic excellence in both teaching and research.
This contributes to its having a higher proportion of graduates attaining employment within six months of completing their course than those of any other UK university.
Recent Higher Education Statistics Agency figures show that 79% of Aston University students gain employment within six months of graduating against the UK average of 67%.
