Professor Paul G Maropoulos Dipl Eng, MSc, PhD, Eur Ing, CEng, FHEA, FCIRP, FIMechE
Professor Paul Maropoulos is Aston’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange. At Aston, he is also Professor of Manufacturing Engineering. Professor Maropoulos has a strong international research profile, a successful track record of technology transfer activity working with SMEs and supply chains, and a long-standing commitment to regional economic growth. Prior to joining Aston, Professor Maropoulos has held Professorial appointments at the Universities of Durham and Bath. At Bath, he was Chair of Innovative Manufacturing, Director of the Laboratory for Integrated Metrology Applications and served as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the current Chairman of the Manufacturing Industries Division of the IMechE. Professor Maropoulos is well known at a national level, working with government bodies and industry and has a strong influence in the engineering profession. He has been awarded substantial research grants and contracts from EPSRC, Innovate UK, EU and Industry and led large research centres in engineering manufacturing and metrology, working with blue-chip companies such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Nissan, Caterpillar and Renishaw. He led initiatives to promote engineering metrology and verification to SMEs, directing large collaborative projects that reached hundreds of companies in the South West of England and had major impact in terms of GVA growth. He provided thought leadership for the definition of the National Product Verification Programme that is now operational, advancing the deployment and adoption of advanced metrology and verification technologies by SMEs and supply chains. Professor Maropoulos has published extensively and he maintains a global research presence as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Engineering Manufacture, is an elected Fellow of the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP) and the Chair and Founder of the International Conference in Digital Enterprise Technology. He is also Visiting Professor at two leading Universities in China. Professor Maropoulos is leading Aston’s Research and Knowledge Exchange activities, including; research quality and REF, Aston Graduate School, HEIF strategy and institutional research and doctoral training initiatives and collaborative innovation partnerships, working with Midlands Innovation, the Midlands Engine and other regional and national bodies.
